KOLKATA: Kolkata Knight Riders took another step towards setting the house in order after a disappointing 2025 IPL season by naming former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar as their new head coach. The team continued with Indian coach after parting ways with Chandrakant Pandit . The Madhya Pradesh coach left after three seasons during which the team won the IPL title (in 2024) after a ten-year gap.

Nayar has always been an important part of the KKR leadership group since taking charge of the KKR academy in Mumbai in 2018. He was later brought in the main team’s support staff as an assistant coach. The former Mumbai all-rounder who also played three ODIs for India in 2009, is regarded quite highly among players and is believed to have played a vital role in helping out KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, and even Rohit Sharma.

Nayar was also part of Team India’s coaching set-up under head coach Gautam Gambhir till he was sacked unceremoniously after India’s Champions Trophy triumph. He was immediately brought back into the KKR setup last year. KKR finished eighth in the last season of IPL.

The 42-year-old Nayar also served as Trinbago Knight Riders’ head coach in CPL 2022 and, more recently, was at the helm of UP Warriorz’ affairs in the Women’s Premier League.

“Abhishek has been a vital part of the Knight Riders setup since 2018, shaping our players both on and off the field. His understanding of the game and connection with players have been key to our growth. We’re thrilled to see him take over as Head Coach and lead KKR into its next chapter,” said KKR CEO Venky Mysore.

More changes are expected in the KKR backroom after bowling consultant Bharat Arun and spin-bowling consultant Carl Crowe have moved to Lucknow Super Giants.
